Finally, let’s go ahead and select our Cogo Point, located in the southwestern corner of our proposed site, and classify it as a Low Point grading object by selecting this option in the Grading Object Tool palette, as shown in Figure 6.10.

At this point, we have simply assigned several grading objects that we can further define and apply additional parameters to, using our GRADING PROPERTIES dialog box. This process will certainly come in handy as we want to further refine our Grading Optimization results later on, but there’s no need to do this now.

You also may be thinking, how this is going to work without defining any of these additional parameters or applying any specific elevation data to the polylines and Cogo Point we’ve selected? This is the beauty of the Grading Optimization tool. We don’t have to think too much from the get-go, specifying some very basic geometry to achieve some really good grading concepts and a more thorough understanding of what design options are available to us.

That said, let’s go ahead and jump into our full Grading Optimization tool, take a peek at what’s under the hood, and see how well this advanced tool can help us out quickly with relative ease.
